Advisement at UNM is committed to empowering students to be the agents of their own education and make informed decisions to pursue their educational, professional, and personal goals.
Our advisors not only educate students on university systems and degree requirements but also equip them with essential life skills including self-advocacy, navigating bureaucracy, making long-term plans, effective communication, and overcoming challenges.
Advisors demonstrate respect for each student by honoring their future aspirations and past experiences, acting with integrity, and upholding the student’s autonomy in decision-making. They, in turn, deserve the respect of the university community for their expertise and service to student success.
Successful advisement relies on two types of collaboration. First, at its core, advisement is a relationship between the advisor and student with each contributing to the conversation to help the student navigate their path forward. Second, advisors are responsible for working across advisement units and with other campus partners to provide quality referrals and come together to support the student in wayfinding and overcoming obstacles.
To best support students, advisors endeavor to create transparency by demystifying complex processes, providing students with clear expectations, and using accessible language in advisement notes, emails, websites and other communications.
Advisement serves all students who choose to make UNM part of their academic journey. We meet them where they are and consider where they came from. To meet the diverse needs of their students, advisors provide multiple channels for students to access their services and aim to provide inclusive opportunities for students to receive timely support in a format that meets their needs.
