Academic Advisor Training Coordinator

About Shannon Saavedra:

I was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and have spent my career working in higher education. I earned my Bachelor’s in Business Administration (2005) and Master’s in Organizational Learning and Instructional Technology (2010) from the University of New Mexico. My journey began as an academic advisor in University College. A few years later I transitioned into advisor training and coordinating professional development opportunities. Beyond my work at UNM, I’m involved with NACADA, serving as co-chair for the 2022 Region 10 Conference and presenting at the national conference three times. Outside of work, I love spending time with my daughters, whether cheering them on in their activities or leading their Girl Scout adventures.

My Role in OAS

As the Advisor Training Coordinator within OAS, I am responsible for onboarding all new advisors at UNM, ensuring they have the knowledge and resources needed to support students effectively. I also coordinate professional development workshops throughout the year, helping advisors stay current in their knowledge and approaches. Also, each fall, I lead the planning of our annual Advisor Institute, a key event that fosters collaboration and learning within the advisement community. My goal is to support and empower advisors through meaningful training opportunities that enhance their skills and impact on student success.
