Yesenie Cano

Academic Advisement Coordinator - Dual Credit/Transfer

About Yesenie Cano:

I grew up in a very small rural agriculture town in the Oklahoma Panhandle. I am the queer daughter of two Mexican immigrants and a first-generation college graduate. While attending Oklahoma Panhandle State University, I earned my bachelor's of arts in history with a minor in education. I am the product of TRIO UB & SSS programs, CAMP, Hispanic student centers, and NEA. Through my involvements, I've learned about activism and advocating for marginalized students, cultivating education justice, creating safe and brave spaces, and mentoring students. Being an educator, I have taught within both K-12 classroom settings as well as under the TRIO umbrella. As a generational curse breaker, I am the first in my lineage to seek therapy and prioritize mental health. I moved to New Mexico, began working at UNM's Office of Advising Strategies, and plan on furthering my education at the graduate level.

My Role in OAS:

My role consists of assisting students through the dual credit program as well as supporting transfer and branch transition student pathways. I help guide students through their transition from high school dual enrollment or college onward to university.
